A bachelor's degree A baccalaureate degree from a U.S.-accredited school, plus a Board-approved nursing home administration program or specialized skilled-nursing-facility management coursework, is the standard pathway (Haw. Code R. 16-90-7.5). The Board may waive the specialized coursework if the applicant already demonstrates the knowledge or has 3 years of health-related administrative experience within the preceding 5 years. A qualifying master's degree (hospital administration, or public health specializing in gerontology or health administration, plus an approved 3-credit skilled-nursing-facility administration course) is an alternate pathway that waives most of the other requirements. Administrator-in-Training hours

• 2,080 hours: Administrator-in-Training program (Haw. Code R. 16-90-37): at least 2,080 hours under a licensed preceptor at a facility with 50 or more beds, at least half the hours between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., with quarterly performance evaluations submitted to the Board. Hawaii also accepts, in lieu of the formal AIT program, 1 year of administrative experience in a skilled nursing or intermediate care facility, or 1 year of administrative experience in another health-related area (no separate hour count published for these alternatives; the applicant's qualifying master's degree waives this requirement entirely).
